Portugal
Porto, Portugal
WE LOVE PORTO. This is a great city for visitors. Portugal is a bit off the beaten path, so while a lot of our friends mention that they have always wanted to go there, they also add that so far they just haven’t had the opportunity or made the time. The people in Porto could not have been friendlier. The atmosphere is relaxed. We do not recommend the Hop On Hop Off. The music was loud and the English narrative was muffled, so we had to turn it up and down and finally turned it off. Once again the food was great! We are planning to go back in December.
Bangkok, Thailand
We’ve lived in Bangkok for about one year now. It’s home. The Thais are very welcoming. The city is a wonder. There are close to 8 million people and amazingly most the time there is no honking in traffic. We primarily use the Sky Train to go anywhere to avoid the congested streets. It’s efficient and clean. One day the train had a snafu that forced everyone to be late. They had it fixed the next day and offered anyone who was inconvenienced two free trips. Of course, the food is fantastic.
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Chiang Mai is a one hour flight north of Bangkok. Howard and I went shortly after we arrived. It’s a quaint, old town. We took a tour to the Elephant Park where the elephants paint (seriously, on canvass). The elephants are extremely well-cared for here.
Chiang Rai, Thailand
We went to Chiang Rai on another occasion. We went on a hiking tour to a water fall and to the Singha Park The Singha beer industry/family developed it for all to enjoy. Lots of beautiful rolling land. We also took a boat ride outside of town, which was quite interesting. Later we visited the White Temple. It was reconstituted by a local Thai artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat in 1997.
Ireland
Ireland and Scotland have been frequent places to visit – great people, beautiful landscape, refreshing weather (true!).
Egypt
Working in Egypt was a privilege and pleasure, primarily working with the Egyptians. We also had the opportunity to explore the historic sites. And no one can show off history better than Egypt!
Nepal
We lived in Nepal, 1991-94, and have been back to work and visit with friends many times. It is like a second home to us.
Antarctica
A lucky and amazing opportunity…
